Weird – A Classic Horror Anthology Magazine
Weird was a horror anthology magazine first published in the 1960s by Eerie Publications, known for its gruesome tales and macabre themes. The first issue, released in 1965, featured a cover by Carl Burgos, establishing the eerie tone that would define the series. Inside, readers were treated to gory horror stories drawn by Carl Burgos, Roger Elwood, and Robert Hayward Webb.
The issue introduced Morris, the Caretaker of Weird, a horror host who guided readers through the chilling stories. The magazine often reanimated stories from classic pre-Code horror comics, offering fresh spins on familiar themes. One standout tale was a retelling of the Frankenstein saga, told from the perspective of the Monster, showcasing the magazine’s ability to reimagine classic narratives. Another compelling story followed a scientist’s examination of mummy’s eyes from Cairo, only for the eyes’ owner to return, creating a chilling confrontation. The issue also explored apocalyptic themes, with a trumpet that signals the end of days falling into the hands of a homeless man named Gabrie.
For collectors of vintage horror comics, Weird stands as a significant title in the pre-Code horror revival, offering graphic storytelling, unique characters, and shocking narratives that have left a lasting impact on the genre.
