Fantastic Monsters of the Films – The Lost Gem of Classic Horror Fandom!
Before Famous Monsters of Filmland ruled the monster magazine scene, there was Fantastic Monsters of the Films, a short-lived but ambitious publication that brought horror fans rare behind-the-scenes insights, stunning monster photos, and DIY special effects guides. Launched in 1962 by Paul Blaisdell, the legendary creature designer behind 1950s B-movie classics like The She-Creature and It! The Terror from Beyond Space, this magazine was created by a monster maker, for monster fans.
Though it only lasted seven issues, Fantastic Monsters of the Films was a treasure trove of vintage horror and sci-fi content, offering in-depth articles, rare production stills, and features on both classic Universal monsters and the wild world of low-budget creature features. Unlike other magazines of the time, it even included technical tips on how to make your own movie monsters, straight from Blaisdell himself. While it never reached the mainstream success of its rivals, it remains a beloved relic of the early monster fandom era—a true cult classic for those who love their horror schlocky, spooky, and full of handmade charm.
